This homemade Italian seasoning recipe is simple and straightforward.
Dried Italian seasoning is a mix of aromatic herbs used to flavour dishes. These herbs include at least oregano, basil and rosemary. Additional ingredients can be added to the mix.
Italian spices and herbs mix can be used in tomato sauces, pizzas, bread, meatballs, Italian dressings and more.
I'm always making homemade spice mix and creating my own spices and seasonings. This is not just because I used to make and sell spices but because I love making my own and being creative with them plus nothing beats homemade spice mix.

You're probably thinking well that's me why should you mix your own spices when you can just get into Tesco, Walmart, or your local store and get them off the spice shelves? Well let me give you some reasons why you should be making your own homemade seasonings:
- It's customizable- You can customise it to your taste. If you want a particular ingredient in it to be more enhanced, you increase the quantity.
- You know exactly what's in your Italian spice mix. No hidden sugar, salt, colouring, or preservatives.
- Easy and quick to make. All you need is 5 minutes of your time and you have the best Italian seasoning mix.
- It's inexpensive- Making your seasoning at home is cheaper as you can use the ingredients you already have. It also tastes better than store-bought brands.
I hope with these few points next time you go food shopping you won't be reaching for Italian seasoning packet but rather make yours.

Ingredients for Italian seasoning
Dried Italian seasoning ingredients range from 3 - 10 ingredients and vary from brand to brand. For this homemade recipe, the ingredients are:
Basil - a good source of magnesium and has anti-inflammatory properties.
Marjoram - a unique herb in the mint family similar to oregano but with a milder flavour. Has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Thyme - highly aromatic with a gentle flavour that goes well with many dishes.
Oregano - woody flavourful herb great in tomato sauces and meat.
Rosemary - intensely fragrant herb
What else can be added to it?
Crushed Chilli
Garlic powder
Onion powder
Sage
Parsley
I prefer to use just 5 ingredients (Oregano, basil, rosemary, marjoram and thyme) in my Italian seasoning then add the optional ingredients in dishes where I deem fit.

How To Make Italian Seasoning
This is one of the easiest DIY spice blends ever. All you need to do is measure and mix. Here's how to :
1) measure out the ingredients (Basil, Thyme, Marjoram, Oregano, and Rosemary) into a bowl or spice jar.
2) Mix till well combined
3) Transfer to a spice jar or airtight container, label and store.
What is Italian seasoning used for
It is used to flavour food. You can use Italian herb seasoning in pasta, chicken, meats, pizza, tomato sauces, bolognese, and meatballs. It is versatile.
Some of the recipes you can use it for are:
Pasta- Ground beef pasta, spinach pasta, steak pasta, lemon pasta, spicy pasta
Sauces, stews, and curries- Chicken tomato sauce,
Steak- Pan fried steak, Sirloin steak, Homemade meatballs
Marinades- It can be used in marinades such as steak marinade, salmon marinade, tuna steak marinade, and chicken wings marinade.
Vegetables- Pan fried vegetables, air fryer vegetables, roasted carrots
You can add to dry rub for chicken wings
Pizza
Bread- Garlic bread
Meatloaf
Tips for Making Dried Italian Seasoning Blend
- Make sure the mixing bowl, spoons and containers are properly dried before use.
- Avoid moist, wet tools in preparing the spice blend.
- Use a spice jar or an airtight container to store your homemade Italian spice mix.
- To keep Italian herb seasoning fresher for longer, keep away from heat or direct sunlight.
- When using the seasoning, don't pour it directly over steaming food as the moisture can get into the seasoning and make it clump. Measure the quantity required with a spoon instead.
- Store it in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Shake the spice jar to remix the seasoning before use.
How To Store
Transfer it to a spice jar or an airtight container, label it with name and expiry dates and store it in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight.
It can be stored for up to 12 months depending on the expiry date of the herbs and spices used. Use the nearest expiry date of the individual ingredients so it's best to use ones with a long shelf life.
Does Italian seasoning expire? Yes, it does, however, it will still be edible and won't make you ill but the herbs lose their flavour.
