Rice is one food we eat a lot in my household. When it comes to food, rice speaks my love language. You will realise how much i like rice as this blog gets older and i share more of my rice recipes with you. I absolutely love eating rice and I cook it atleast 3 times a week. There are so many ways to cook rice and eat rice. To me, it never gets old, never gets boring.
White rice for me has to have the perfect texture. When cooked, it must not be hard and not too soft as to be mushy. Hard rice doesn't reach it's full flavour potential and when it's mushy it loses most of it's flavour. That is why getting the right balance is important.
There are two methods of how i cook rice - on stove top and in rice cooker but to be honest my rice cooker get used maybe just once a year. I rarely use it as cooking rice on stove top is so much easier and convenient for me. However i'll give recipe for both in this post. I have been cooking rice since i was a teenager which is atleast over 20 years now and this rice recipe has never failed me.
What is Long grain rice
Long grain rice is slim and as the name implies, long rice with dry, firm texture. They are best used for plain rice sides and pilafs. This type of rice is dry and fluffy when cooked and because of its low starch content, when cooked properly it's not mushy and separates easily. There are different varieties of long grain rice such as white and brown rice, basmati rice, jasmine rice. This recipe is for easy cook long grain rice.
Should i wash rice?
This is one of the frequently asked questions when it comes to cooking rice. To wash rice or not to? Yes you should! I always do. All the time! I grew up in a country rice was sold in open market so not washing rice was not even an option. Even after moving to UK where rice are well packaged, i still always wash rice. It takes just few minutes to wash rice and takes nothing away from me. A quick wash with warm water and i'm sure any dirt is atleast rinsed off. I am not left guessing. Secondly washing rice rinses off excess starch and makes the rice fluffier and less sticky.
How to wash rice
- Pour rice in a bowl and add warm water. Rinse and drain.
- Repeat above step one or two more times.
- Drain and it's ready to be cooked

1 Cup easy cook long grain rice
2 - 2 ¼ Cups Water
Salt
How to cook rice
1) Measure rice and wash atleast 2 times with warm water then drain.
2) In a pot add water, put on stove and leave to boil.
3) Pour washed rice in boiling water, add salt and cover.
4) When the water starts bubbling, reduce the heat to lowest and steam cook the rice for about 15- 20 minutes or till water dries up.
5) Take off heat and leave covered for 5 minutes. Uncover and fluff with fork.
Serve.
How to cook long grain rice in rice cooker
1) Measure rice and wash atleast 2 times with warm water then drain.
2) Pour in rice cooker, add 2 Cups of water and salt to taste.
3) Turn the rice cooker on and cook according to the rice cooker instructions.

Tips for cooking perfect long grain rice
- Rice will expand as it cooks so ensure you use big enough pot
- The water should be boiling before adding rice.
- Source quality brand of rice.
- Don't stir rice during cooking .
- Don't leave rice uncovered during cooking.
