    This boiled cabbage recipe is easy, quick, and straightforward. It is ready in 15 minutes or less, and is a vegetable side dish for any occasion, be it mid-week dinner, weekend, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, St Patrick, or anytime you just feel like it.

    Boiling cabbage makes it tender, and when you add salt, butter, and black pepper, it is super delicious and you will want to have it as a side dish all the time.

    Cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable that is packed full of nutrients, high in Vitamin C and K, and helps improve digestion, amongst many other benefits.

    Cabbage - I like to use white cabbage (also known as green cabbage) for this recipe but you can also use red cabbage.

    Butter

    Black pepper

    Salt

    How To Cut Cabbage

    Peel off the outer layer if it's discolored or torn. Don't take out the root.

    Rinse the cabbage

    Use a sharp knife to cut the cabbage into wedges of 4 - 8 depending on the size.

    How To Boil Cabbage

    Remove the outer leaves and rinse the Cabbage.

    Cut it into wedges or slices.

    Arrange the cabbage in a wide pot then add water or stock to the cabbage.

    Put the pot on heat and let the cabbage boil for 7- 12 minutes or till it's tender to how you like it.

    Drain the water then add butter, salt, and pepper to the cabbage.

    Take off heat.

    Serve and enjoy.

    How Long To Boil Cabbage

    This depends on the size and cut of the cabbage. Whole cabbage will take longer to cook than cabbage wedges and cabbage wedges will take longer to cook than sliced or shredded Cabbage.

    How long to boil cabbage is between 7-15 minutes.

    For How long to boil shredded cabbage is 6-8 minutes

    How long to boil whole cabbage is 12-16 minutes.

    Cabbage is boiled when it is soft and tender. You can test this by cutting into one and tasting it. You can also test by inserting a knife into the thickest part of the cabbage. If it goes in without resistance then it's tender.

    Don't overcook Cabbage to prevent it from going limp and smelling bad.

    How To Boil Cabbage In Microwave

    You can boil cabbage in the microwave however because of the limitation in microwave size and the bowl that can fit, this will only be suitable for small cabbage, or a few shredded or sliced cabbage. To boil cabbage in the microwave:

    Add cabbage and a bit of water in a microwavable bowl.

    Cover the bowl and put it in the microwave.

    Microwave at high settings for 4 minutes. Bring out the bowl and check for doneness, if it's not tender, microwave at 30 seconds intervals till it's cooked.

    When it's cooked, bring out the bowl, and drain the water.

    Immediately add butter, pepper, and salt.

    Serve and enjoy it warm.

    Boiled cabbage is a healthy vegetable dish that can be served with any meal. Some recommendations are:

    Fish- Air fryer tilapia, Pan fried salmon, air fryer haddock

    Chicken- Garlic chicken thighs, Baked chicken drumsticks, pan fried chicken drumsticks

    Steak- Sirloin steak recipe, pan fried steak, instant pot steak

    Rice- Long grain rice

    Corned beef, Kielbasa, Air fryer lamb chops

    How To Store

    When it's completely cooled, pack in a sealable container and store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

    Reheat in the microwave- Put on microwave-safe plate and microwave at 30 seconds intervals till warmed to how you like it. Be careful not to overcook it.

    You can use leftover boiled cabbage in salads, wraps, soups, and stews.
