Before i started making my own jerk spice, i would buy from the stores but since i've started making mine, i have not looked back and neither will you with this easy recipe.
In terms of quality and taste, this homemade Jamaican jerk seasoning rub is better than any store bought i've ever used.
Jamaican Jerk Seasoning Recipe
Jamaican jerk seasoning is a mixture of spices that consist of hot peppers - scotch bonnet, all spice and ingredients like cinnamon, nutmeg, thyme and others. It is named after a method of cooking native to Jamaica where meat is marinated with with hot spice blend and holes poked in the meat to infuse flavour.
Jerk seasoning was originally used on chicken and pork, but is now widely used on shrimp, beef, fish, goat, lamb and vegetables.
This Jamaican jerk seasoning is easy to make and I like making my own homemade spices and seasonings. Here's why you should be making yours too:
- You know the ingredients that goes in it.
- It saves you money as it's cost effective.
- You can customise - If there's any particular ingredient you are allergic to or do not like you can leave it out.
- No artificial ingredients or preservatives goes in it.
- You can control the heat level! You want it mild, hot or extra hot? the choice is yours!

How to make Jamaican Jerk Seasoning
1) Measure and add all the ingredients in a clean dry bowl.
2) Mix the ingredients together.
It's ready to use. Store in a spice jar or airtight container.

How to Store
Pour in airtight container or spice jar, label with name and date then store in a cool dry place, away from direct sunlight.
Jamaican jerk seasoning can be stored for up to a year (consider the expiry dates of the ingredients used) but it's best to make in small batches so they are not stored for too long.
Tips
- Make sure mixing bowl, spoons and containers are properly dried before use.
- Avoid moist, wet tools in preparing this seasoning mix.
- Use airtight container or spice jar to store your homemade jerk marinade.
- Store away from direct heat or direct sunlight so as to prevent flavor loss.
- To keep spices fresher for longer, It’s best to make in small batches so they are not stored for too long. That way it remains fresh.

- 2.5 tablespoon Brown Sugar
- 1 tablespoon All spice
