It makes use of few ingredients and cooks in less than 30 minutes. Let me show you how to cook Jamaican rice and beans in your instant pot with this step by step guide.

    It's another easy recipe today and this time it's this super delicious rice and beans cooked Jamaican rice and peas style.

    This easy rice and beans recipe is cooked in one pot just like my instant pot chicken and rice recipe (i love one pot recipes). It's healthy, flavorful and filling.

    Serve with chicken curry, beef tips and gravy, chicken thighs, instant pot carrots or any other side of choice for simple, comforting meal.

    Instant Pot Rice and Beans Recipe

    This recipe requires few ingredients, it's inexpensive and you get delicious rice and beans on the table in just 20 minutes!

    With this recipe, you cook the rice and beans together in one pot. The beans and rice comes out tender and fluffy, both cooked to perfection.

    I have used long grain rice in this post but you can also use basmati or brown rice (See notes in frequently asked questions section below).

    This recipe is simple, quick, cooks in less than 30 minutes and you get the most delicious Jamaican rice and peas. It's failproof and you can't go wrong with it.

    Let me show you how i make the best pressure cooker beans and rice.

    Ingredients for Instant Pot rice and beans (Jamaican rice and beans

    Rice

    Red kidney beans

    Coconut milk or Water

    Salt

    Onion

    Thyme

    Pepper - Scotch bonnet or black pepper.

    Oil - Vegetable, sunflower, coconut or olive oil.

    How to make Rice and Beans in instant pot ( Jamaican )

    Wash rice with warm water 3- 4 times or till water runs clear.

    Set instant pot to saute then add oil in the pot of the instant pot. Add onion and saute for a minute or till onions transclucent. Turn off the saute mode.

    Add washed rice in the pot then add in beans, coconut milk, water, pepper, thyme and salt.

    Add all other ingredients

    Cover the instant pot with it's lid, lock securely and turn the knob to sealing position.

    Switch on the instant pot and set to pressure cook manual on high for 8 minutes. After the 8 minutes of pressure cooking, do 10 minutes natural pressure release.

    When pot is depressured, take off the lid and fluff rice and beans.

    How to Store

    Leftover rice and beans can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days and frozen for up to 3 months.

    To store, put in airtight container or freezer bags, label with dates and store in the fridge or freezer.

    To reheat, microwave from frozen on high heat or re heat on stovetop.

    Tips

    • Wash rice with warm water atleast 2-3 times or till water runs clear.
    • Replace water with broth for more flavour.
    • You can replace kidney beans in this recipe for black beans, pinto or black eyed beans.
    • Substitute scotch bonnet with black pepper or cayenne pepper.
    • It's important to deglaze pot after sauteeing onion so you don't get burn error message.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can i double this recipe?

    Yes you can. The cooking time remain the same even when you double the recipe.

    Do i have to soak rice?

    No you don't soak rice. Just wash with warm water 3 or four times or till water runs clear.

    Can i use brown rice?

    Yes you can but brown rice takes longer to cook so pressure cook for 25 minutes instead of 10 minutes stated for long grain rice.

    Can i use dried beans?

    As dried beans takes longer to cook than canned ones, you will have to cook the dried beans first before adding rice and other ingredients.

    How long does it take to pressure cook dried beans?

    It takes from 30 - 55 minutes depending on the type. For kidney beans used in this recipe, it takes

    Equipment

    • Instant pot pressure cooker

    Ingredients

    • 2 cups Rice
    • 1 can Beans Red Kidney beans (drained)
    • 1 teaspoon Dried Thyme or 1 sprig fresh thyme
    • 1 Scotch bonnet or cayrenne or black pepper
    • 1 medium Onion chopped
    • 2 tablespoon Oil vegetable, sunflower, coconut or olive oil
    • Salt to taste
    • 3.5 cups Water or broth 3.25 cups if using coconut milk
    • ¼ cup Coconut milk optional

    Instructions

    • Wash rice with warm water 3- 4 times or till water runs clear.
    • Set instant pot to saute then add oil in the pot of the instant pot. Add onion and saute for a minute or till onions transclucent. Turn off the saute mode.
    • Add washed rice in the pot then add in beans, water,onion, pepper, thyme and salt. Deglaze the pot and add coconut milk on top.
    • Cover the instant pot with it's lid, lock securely and turn the knob to sealing position. Set to manual pressure cook high 8 minutes.
    • After the pressure cooking, do 10 minutes natural pressure release. When pot is depressured, take the lid off and fluff rice and beans.
    • Serve and enjoy with sides of choice.

    Notes

    Can i use brown rice?
    Yes you can but brown rice takes longer to cook so pressure cook for 25 minutes instead of 10 minutes stated for long grain rice.
    Can i use dried beans?
    As dried beans takes longer to cook than canned ones, you will have to cook the dried beans first before adding rice and other ingredients.
    Tips
    • Deglaze instant pot after adding in water as some bits might be stuck on the bottom of the pot after sauteing onion.
    • If your instant pot is sensitive to burn error, add the beans last in the pot and don't stir in.
    • It's important to deglaze pot after sauteeing onion so you don't get burn error message.
    • Wash rice with warm water atleast 2-3 times or till water runs clear.
    • Replace water with broth for more flavour.
    • You can replace kidney beans in this recipe for black beans, pinto or black eyed beans.
    • Substitute scotch bonnet with black pepper or cayenne pepper.

      I was about to make this recipe for a pot luck but I ran out of time so I can't rate it yet. The pot luck ended up dispersing because of an out of nowhere rain storm! I signed up for your blog and I am looking forward to other great recipes.
