    Curried black eyed peas recipe that is simple, creamy, packed full of flavour and warming. This black eyed peas curry recipe is made with black eyed beans, curry powder, coconut milk and spices.

    I hated beans growing up but now i do like beans and i get to cook it in as many delicious ways as possible. This is one of my favourite black eyed beans recipe. My dearest daughter 1 doesn't like beans while dearest daughter 2 loves beans. I am hoping my dd1 will outgrow the dislike of beans just like i did.

    The first time i made this recipe, i wasn't sure daughter 1 would fancy it because of her dislike of beans dishes but with this creamy coconuty, curry , warming goodness..what's not to love about it? she loved it ! This is the only way she enjoys beans now.

    What is Black eyed peas?

    Black eyed peas are part of beans and peas family. Said to be first cultivated in West Africa and eventually became popular all over the world. It is called Lobia in Hindi and also known as field peas.

    On New years day it is enjoyed in the South and believed to be a lucky meal for luck and prosperity.

    They are are high in fibre which makes you fuller for longer so if you are on a weightloss journey this is a good one. It aids digestion, packed full of nutrient and good source of protein. Other benefits include reducing inflammation, improving blood pressure and lowering risks of diabetes.

    165 grams of cooked black eyed peas contains 160 calories of which 34 grams of carbs, 5 grams of protein and 8 grams of fibre.

    Black eyed peas curry ingredients

    For this delicious simple black eyed peas recipe, you will need :

    Black eyed peas

    Mixed peppers (red, green and yellow bell peppers)

    Onion

    Spring Onion

    Garlic

    Curry powder

    Dried thyme

    Vegetable, sunflower or coconut oil,

    Seasoning cube

    Black pepper

    Birds eye chilli or Scotch bonnet (Optional)

    Are black eyed beans and black eyed peas the same?

    Yes they are the same. Some call it black eyed peas while some black eyed beans.

    What other beans can i use instead of black eyed peas?

    You can use brown beans for this recipe.

    Do i have to use coconut milk?

    No . You can substitute Coconut milk with stock or water.

    Can i add chicken to make it black eyed peas chicken curry?

    Yes you can add chicken or prawn.

    If beans or black eyed peas give you heartburn, try soaking it in water for an hour before cooking.

    Curried black eyed peas recipe /Black eyed peas curry recipe

    Add washed black eyed peas in a pot, add water and salt. Cook till soft. This takes about 45 minutes on stove top and if using pressure cooker or instant pot it takes lesser time.

    In a seperate pot, add Vegetable oil then add garlic and onion. Sautee for 2 minutes before adding curry powder and thyme.

    Add Coconut milk, seasoning cube and stir then add cooked black eyed beans.

    Add Mixed peppers, scotch bonnet, seasoning cube, spring onions and black pepper. Cover and leave to cook for 5-10 minutes. Top with some coriander then take off heat.

    What else can i add in my curried black eyed peas ?

    You can add chicken or prawns

    You can also add Spinach for extra protein. Add 5 minutes before the end of cooking.

    What sides go with black eyed peas

    You can eat black eyed peas curry on it's own as a main dish or serve with:

    Instant Pot Basmati Rice

    Plantain

    Instant Pot White rice

    Potatoes

    How to store black eyed peas curry

    Black eyed peas curry can be kept in the fridge for up to 5 days and in the freezer for up to 3 months. To keep in the freezer, put black eyed peas in freezer safe container and freeze. When needed, bring out, defrost, heat and enjoy.

    Ingredients

    • 1.5 Cup Black eyed Peas
    • 4 tbsp Vegetable oil
    • 2-4 Cloves Garlic minced
    • 1 Large Onion chopped or Sliced
    • 2.5 tbsp Curry Powder
    • 400 ml Coconut milk
    • 1 Cup Mixed peppers red, green and yellow bell peppers
    • 1 Birds eye chilli or Scotch bonnet (Optional) chopped
    • 1 tspn Black pepper
    • ¼ Cup Spring Onions chopped
    • 1 tbsp Dried thyme
    • 1 Seasoning Cube
    • Salt to taste

    Instructions

    • Add washed black eyed peas in a pot, add water and salt. Cook till soft. This takes about 40 minutes on stovetop
    • In a seperate pot add vegetable oil then garlic. Sautee for 2 minutes before adding curry powder and thyme.
    • Add coconut milk, seasoning cube and stir then add the cooked black eyed beans.
    • Add mixed peppers, scotch bonnet, spring onions, salt and black pepper. Cover and leave to cook for 5-10 miutes.
    • Add chopped Coriander, stir and take off heat
