This Nandos style spicy rice recipe is simple and tasty. If you've been following this blog for a while now you already know my love for rice. Kemi don't get tired of eating rice! So it's no surprise Nando's spicy rice is my preferred side to go with their chicken peri peri.
Anytime we go there, I would order spicy rice as side dish while my children would go for chips. What is it with kids and chips eh?

What kind of rice is used in spicy rice
I use easy cook long grain rice or basmati rice for this spicy rice flavoured rice. You can use other types of rice like brown rice or Jasmine. Don't forget brown rice takes longer to cook than the other types mentioned so adjust cooking time if you choose to use brown rice.
How to make Spicy rice
Place pot on the stove on medium heat. Add oil in the pot then add in garlic, onions, and bell peppers.
Fry for 1-2 minutes then add in turmeric, paprika, cumin, stock cubes, and cayenne pepper.
Add rice and stir for a minute before adding broth or water.
Cover pot with its lid and cook on low heat for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes add in peas, cover the pot and cook for another 5 minutes or till rice tender.
Stir and take off heat.
Fluff, serve and enjoy.

How to Store
In the fridge - Leave to cool completely, pour in an airtight container, and store in the fridge for up to 5 days.
In the freezer - Leave to cool completely, put in an airtight container or freezer bags, label with dates and store for up to 3 months.
To reheat spicy rice on the stove, add a bit of water and rice in a pot and cook on low heat for about 6 minutes.
To reheat in the microwave, sprinkle the rice with some water so it doesn't dry out in the microwave.
This Nando's style spicy rice calories is 298 per serving. Refer to the nutrition notes in the recipe card but note that calculation are estimates only.
Tips
- Wash rice till water runs clear to avoid sticky rice.
- Use chicken broth as stated but where that is not available, you can use stock pot like Knorr or Maggi.
- Adjust cayenne pepper to how spicy you’d like the rice.
- To make this vegetarian, use vegetable stock cubes and broth.

Nando's Spicy Rice Recipe

- 2 cups Rice
- 1 teaspoon Turmeric
- 1 teaspoon Paprika
- ½ teaspoon Cumin
- 1 teaspoon Cayenne pepper or to taste
- 10 g Stock cubes
- 1 medium Onion
- 2 cloves Garlic
- 1 medium Bell pepper
- 4 cups Broth or Water
- ½ cup Peas
- 2 tablespoon Oil Vegetable or Sunflower oil
Instructions
- Place pot on the stove on medium heat. Add oil in the pot then add in garlic, onions and bell peppers.
- Fry for 1-2 minutes then add in turmeric, paprika, cumin, stock cubes and cayenne pepper.
- Add rice and stir for a minute before adding broth or water. Cover pot with its lid and cook on low heat for 20 minutes.
- After 20 minutes, add in the peas, cover the pot and cook for another five minutes or till rice tender. Stir and take off heat.
- Fluff, serve and enjoy delicious spicy rice.

How many stock cubes did you use?
2 Maggi cubes making it 10g as 1 is 5g.
