What is Meat Pie
Meat pie is pastry filled with meat and sometimes vegetables like carrots, peas and potatoes are added.
The pastry used is shortcrust or puff pastry, the filling is made with ground beef/minced beef, chopped onions, beef broth and spices to make rich beef filling. I personally like making pies with shortcrust pastry.
It's popular and there are variation in recipes depending on country. There's the british meat pie often called minced beef pie or steak pie, Australian Aussie meat pie, Nigerian meat pie, Ghanaian meat pie, Savory pies in the US , hand held pies amongst others. They are similar and they all do taste delicious.
Easy Meat Pie Recipe
With this meat pie recipe, the shortcrust pastry is buttery, the filling is flavourful, creamy and delicious.
Making the shortcrust pastry is very easy. Although you can buy ready made ones from the shops, it's less expensive to make, it's quick and require just few ingredients.
There's no time of day one can not eat meat pies. You can have it as main meal or snack served with hot or cold drink.
Like i mentioned in my easy sausage rolls recipe, we do like pastry filled with meat and have it as main dish when it's freshly baked and the leftovers serve as snack the following day.
This individual meat pies recipe is so good and you will love it. To me, this is the best meat pie recipe ever! Let me show you how to make it from scratch.
Pie making tools you'll need
Kitchen scale
Measuring spoons
Mixing bowl
Rolling pin
Pastry brush
Pie dish, ramekin or foil packs - individual size.
Dumpling mould - For hand pies
Ingredients
Self raising flour
Butter
Nutmeg – optional
Salt
Egg
Milk or Water
For the filling
Minced beef / Ground beef - Use store bought or check my post on How to make minced meat at home to make yours.
Thyme
Black pepper
Cayenne pepper (optional)
Worcestershire sauce
Carrots (optional)
Corn flour (cornstarch) or plain flour
Oil
Salt
How to make meat pie
First you make the filling, then make the pastry and the final process of assembling and baking the meat pies. Let me show you how:
Make the filling
Add oil in the pot then add chopped onions. Saute onion for 2 minutes or till translucent then add in minced beef /ground beef.
Brown the minced beef then add in black pepper, thyme, worcestershire sauce, and salt.
Add beef broth then add carrot in the pot. Cover and leave to cook on low heat for 10 minutes or till meat tender.
Open the pot then add in the cornflour slurry to thicken. Stir and wait till it's creamy before taking off heat.
Set aside to cool.
Make the pastry
Making the shortcrust pastry for meat pie or minced beef pie is easy and quick. You also don't need any fancy tool. You can buy store bought if you prefer but if you'd like to make yours (which i recommend), here's how to:
Add flour, salt, nutmeg in a mixing bowl and mix.
Add in butter and mix with your hands till you get crumb like texture then add egg yolk and water. Mix till dough comes together. Don't over mix.
Mold pie pastry into 2 or 3, put in the bowl, cover with cling film and put in the fridge to rest for 30 minutes.
That's the pie pastry done. You can also use my sausage rolls shortcrust pastry for this.
Assemble and bake
Take one part of the meat pie pastry and using a rolling pin, roll on a lightly floured surface.
Lift and place the pastry in a pie dish and put pie filling inside.
Roll out another part of the pastry and cover the pie dish with it. Trim the edges and press the edges down with fork.
Use the fork to make punctures on the top then use a pastry brush to brush the top with egg white (for golden glaze, use egg yolk).
Preheat oven at temperature of 150 degrees (gas mark 2) for 5minutes then bake the meat pies in pre heated oven for 35 minutes or till it’s done.
Serve and Enjoy.

Tips
- Make the filling in advance like a night or days before. You can store in the fridge then bring out to use on the day.
- Don't overwork the dough.
- You can add water to the filling if it's too thick or looks dry. Aim for creamy texture.
- Allow meat pie filling to cool completely before you use.
- Don't make the shortcrust pastry base too thin.
- Use egg yolk to brush pastry top if you want the finished pie to have a dark browm or golden glaze. That would mean using additional egg than stated in this recipe.
- If you don't have pie dish, you can make use of ramekins or make hand held pies by using dumpling mould.
- For the meat pie filling, you can also add peas and potatoes. Infact i like potatoes like in the case of Nigerian meat pie.
How to store
It stores well but before you store, leave to cool completely before putting in ziploc (freezer bags) or wrapping well in aluminium foil then store:
in the fridge for up to 4 days.
in the freezer for up to 3 months.
You can re heat in the oven or microwave and it will come out as if you've just made it.

- 2 large Carrots chopped (optional)
- 2 tablespoon Oil vegetable , sunflower or olive oil
- ½ - 1 cup Beef broth or Water
- 2 tablespoon Corn flour or plain flour mix with 2 tablespoon broth to form slurry.
- Salt to taste
