The ratio of water to beans I use is 2 cups water to 1 cup beans and the cooking time varies from as low as 30 minutes to 60 minutes depending on the variety. Check the type of beans and their various cooking time below.

    Instant Pot Brown beans

Brown beans also called honey beans because of its natural sweetness is similar to black-eyed peas but brown in color. It is a popular variety in West Africa but available in other countries including America, Canada, and the UK.

Water ratio to cook this type is 2 cups of water for every cup of brown beans and cooking time is 40 minutes pressure cook and 10 minutes natural release.

    Instant Pot Navy beans

These are also called pea beans or white navy beans. Navy beans are small pea-sized beans that cook quickly, creamy, and perfect for mashing. They are also nutritious and high in fibre with a cup containing 19g of fibre.

Here are some suggestions of what to serve with:

    Bread rolls

    Long grain rice

    Corn bread

    Plantain

    Potatoes

    How to Store

Let it completely cool before putting in a suitable container then store in the fridge for short term use or in the freezer for longer storage time. It will last in the fridge for 3 days and if stored in the freezer, will last for 3 months. When ready to use, bring out of the freezer, thaw, and reheat in the microwave or stovetop.

    Tips

    • If you have soaked the beans then cooking time will defer slightly.
    • Don't fill the pot more than halfway as beans triple in quantity when cooked.
    • You can cook in bulk and freeze to use in recipes that call for canned beans. 1.5 cup cooked is equivalent to 400g canned beans.
    • Cooking time can be adjusted to how firm or soft you want the beans.
